When you come across a restaurant which is cheap, has great atmosphere, a bar, a roof garden, a good website and plenty of good reviews you just know it is a joke. I like Greek food but after an AWFUL experience at Apollonia Dine and Dance ages ago, I don’t trust Greek cuisine anymore. No, that’s unfair; I guess I don’t trust Greek establishments in London. But once again, we have to bite the bullet and take the risk. So off we go to Elysee in Fitzrovia. On the “Mission’. On a Saturday night. This can potentially fuck up our weekend or unexpectedly become a nice night out. It started well: “Hello, welcome, let me take your coats, etc etc etc…”. Mmmmh, professional…I think. A man, half way between Al Capone and The Incredible Hulk, walk us to our table. Mmmmh, scary…I think. We seat next to the noisiest, silliest and most annoying group of women I have ever come across in my life. And that’s the catch: it is a hen night restaurant. Food will be shit because customers only care about booze, service will be rude and we will have to bear inflatable c0#

This was great! As for the previous, my expectations had been zero. My last experience of a Greek in Fitzrovia had been one of the worst dinners in my life. I was expecting a similar night with this one.

The venue is quite nice for the type of restaurant and the budget. It’s a big room but it has some atmosphere, and it’s spotless. The hen night group sitting next to us worried me at the start, and indeed did manage to disrupt our peace with their screechy, pointless and persistent shouting. However this was not enough to render the evening truly unpleasant. They also tended to calm down a bit as the night progressed. There is live music but we left just as it was starting, so I cannot comment on that.

Food was really good. It was varied, tasty, well prepared, authentic. We had a big assortment of the usual Greek classics and they were all good. There was not a single dish I didn’t like. I stuffed myself beyond reason by ordering a second round of a few things.

This restaurant must fill up quite late as with the live music and all it is intended to be a kind of all-night experience. The result was it was still half empty when we ate, which meant service was super efficient. The staff there must be used to big parties, lots of people and noise, etc. and they really looked like they could do their job blindfolded. Particularly our waiter was brilliant: not only was he fast, always present when you needed him, and got everything right: he also seemed to be able to guess what I was going to ask for before I even said a word.

Value for money was excellent – within budget and one of the best we’ve had for that. All in all this is a hen night haunt, yes, but one with good service, good food, and much better looking than most others. Would I recommend it? Oh, yes.
